Band Info

History:    Doug Moon,  Original guitarist with Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, between 1964 and 1968.  Worked with various bands from 1968 to 1972, including,  Denny King and the B.O.Boogie band with ex-members of Captain Beefheart. Doug played mostly harmonica.  Then switched to Christian Music. He was in the Come Together Singers with Jimmy,Carol, and Jamie Owens and played guitar in church up to 1978, when he quit music to get a "Real Job" in Communications and  Broadcast Engineering.  After a divorce in 1988, back into music.
In 1991, Doug  started a Blues band with Alex Snouffer (the other original guitartist from Captain Beefheart),  Johnny (Trump) Trombatore of The Champs, Ed Freeman of The Drifters, Phil Armitage, and Jim Scimonetti. After the blues craze, Doug started a band called "Night Train",about 1994, doing oldies rock, R&B, rockabilly, and blues. Then Doug went un-plugged about 1996, only to find out that Eric Clapton stole his "Thunder"!
Mostly solo and "Hired Gun" gigs since 1998,  until more recently. After retirement in 2004, Doug is more into music, studying, learning swing guitar and bluegrass banjo. He plays clawhammer banjo in  Danance and bluegrass guitar in Calico.  He started giving banjo and harmonica lessons at Mario's music(now- Tapp's Music) in 2005.         Currently, playing senior and coffee house gigs,  and recording.

Career Highlights:   Most memorable experiences quoted. "Winning the Battle of the Bands in 1965. Meeting Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder at the Teenage Fair in 1965. (I don't care what Ry say's, I don't remember anything about a crossbow !).  Recording the lead lick on Diddy Wa Diddy.  Jamming with Muddy Waters and his band at our managers place in Hollywood.  Catching Eric Burden when he fell off the stage stoned, at the Whiskey a Go Go.  Hanging out with Frank Zappa.  Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. Gig in Hawaii. Meeting Lightning Hopkins, Jimmy Reed, John Fahey, The Stones, The Beatles, John Lee Hooker, BB King, and Ian Whitcomb.  The parties, the girls, and drugs? We won't glorify that!!  Recording on Safe as Milk, and all the sleepless nights working those tunes up. Almost forgot, the gig at The Ice House, we were booked with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
Past the Beefheart days,  being the only white guy in an all black R&B band.  Recording on Evil Wind Blowing with the B.O Boogie Band and the gigs in Pocatella and El Centro.  Now it's about 1972 and I'm getting a fresh start after "burning out" from the 60's. Went back to college and church. Had a wonderfull time with the Come Together Singers at the Church on the Way in Van Nuys. We did some shows and church gigs.  I met the Boone family,  Barry McGuire  there, but it was time to return to the desert. I ended up booking Christian Music concerts in Lancaster.  I would often open for them and even MC a bit.  Did a short DJ stint for a Christian Radio show.
Got married, had 2 daughters, and it was all business and no music for the next 10 years.  But soon after the divorce, here come all my old music friends,  "HE'S  BAAACK" !!!  Worked with Revenat Records on CB&HMB unreleased material box set, Grow Fins, 1999. I made more money on that deal, than everything I ever made in music to date. Gig on a real steam Riverboat chugging down the Sacramento River playing guitar, banjo, harmonica, and singing railroad songs. Next day, same thing on a railroad train. I felt like John Hartford. Doesn't get any better than that.!  Solo banjo gig at All Saints Church in Pasadena. Won 2nd at TBFC on traditional banjo.  Best compliment at a wedding, and it was my 1st time singing for an audience. They cried !!! "
